What are the 15 warning signs of impending tyranny? As tyrants take control of democracies, they typically:

1. Exaggerate their mandate to govern — claiming, for example, that they won an election by a landslide even after losing the popular vote.

2. Repeatedly claim massive voter fraud in the absence of any evidence, in order to restrict voting in subsequent elections.

3. Publicly criticize anyone who criticizes them, labeling them “enemies.”

4. Turn the public against journalists or media outlets that criticize them, calling them “deceitful” and “scum.”

5. Hold few if any press conferences, preferring to communicate with the public directly through mass rallies and unfiltered statements.

6. Tell the public big lies, causing them to doubt the truth and believe fictions that support the tyrants’ goals.

7. Blame economic stresses on immigrants or racial or religious minorities, and foment public bias and even violence against them.

8. Attribute acts of domestic violence on “enemies within,” and use such events as excuses to beef up internal security and limit civil liberties.

9. Threaten mass deportations, registries of religious minorities, and the banning or extreme vetting of refugees.

10. Seek to reduce or eliminate competing centers of power, such as trade unions and opposition parties.

11. Appoint family members to high positions of authority.

12. Surround themselves with their own personal security force rather than with a security detail accountable to the public.

13. Put generals and other military commanders into top civilian posts.

14. Make personal alliances with foreign dictators.

15. Draw no distinction between personal property and public property, profiteering from their public office.

  1. I’ve been reading most anything and everything I find about this man named Trump. Here is one I found interesting —

For Trump, the 1980s still hold relevance

  2. Here’s a scary one —

Steve Bannon’s disturbing views on ‘genetic superiority’ are shared by Trump
They also validate a core belief of white nationalists.

  3. Paul Krugman, in today’s NY Times says the US has become a Stan (as in Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan etc.) Cults of personality, he says, are the norm in the “stans,” which are ruled by strongmen who surround themselves with tiny cliques of wealthy crony capitalists. Happy New Year from Brownbackistan…

    America Becomes a Stan

  4. Definitely, “Trump has arrived!” What next? Inhale deeply and hold your breath; generalized pain is on its way.

    • Trump will make a lot of noise – act all ‘bigly’ and ‘braggadocius’ on his Twitter rants.

But in reality – Trump is nothing more than a reality t.v. show celebrity which is very good at manipulating the media he claims to hate so much.

What I would love for the media to do is this:

Just stop covering every damn word this man spews. That would drive Trump the most nuts. – IMHO

EXACTLY! I wanted this months ago. Attention is like a drug to the egomaniac. If the media had all agreed, early in his candidacy to spend just a few days not covering him, he would have taken to twitter and possibly even youtube lighting his hair on fire or kicking puppies, just to get noticed.
Of course, now he is President elect, and soon……ewww I don’t even wanna say it so I won’t, since he will be the next occupant of the White House, and will do damage every single DAY, he cannot be ignored.
But he IS still vulnerable. True, an ego like Trumps welcomes negative attention instead of no attention at all. But negative attention does get to him. We see this in his reaction to the that he actually lost by 3 million votes, and in many other instances where he is criticized, doubted, etc.
So, the protests MUST continue. “Not MY President” should be a rallying call that he cannot ignore. A simple egomaniac like Trump can only react to that in two ways. He can work very hard to be liked, which is good for us. Or, he could lash out irrationally AGAINST his detractors. Also good for us as this would make him overstep.

    • I watched Charlie Rose interview Ian Bremmer last night on PBS Charlie Rose show.

Ian Bremmer is a fascinating man to listen to – he makes you think.

IIRC – PBS has a link to watching this week’s episodes online. Go on and try to listen to this interview.

Ian Bremmer is the head of the Eurasia Group that follows world politics and what it means – in the big picture.

The last thing I remember Ian Bremmer saying last night was there were three reasons Trump might fail as president.

      1) Incompetence – which would bring down Trump but there are enough safeguards within our government that it would not bring down the entire country.

      2) Corruption – which would bring down Trump himself – and a few others perhaps – but then again – we’ve seen corruption before in our presidents and the country survived.

      3) This last reason is the one that worries Ian Bremmer the most – Trump is an authoritarian – which means that he does not like to be questioned or confronted.

What does Trump do if he is hit with several crisis and his poll ratings slip down to the 20’s – will Trump react like he has in the past and go on Twitter rants throwing out personal insults? Or will Trump overcome that aspect of his character and resist the temptation to over react on Twitter and cause ever bigger crisis?

#3 reason is exactly what Hillary Clinton repeatedly referred to on the campaign trail – remember?

And what did the Trump Chumps do and say about that? They like Trump the Bully – and I suspect these folks would not even think about listening to an interview on PBS because their boy Trump has already convinced them all the mainstream media are a bunch of liars.

      What could possibly go wrong?

  6. It can be quite disturbing and frustrating arguing with a trump supporter.
First you have to make the case that he is a Hitler want to be. Then give examples that illustrate it. Till finally they actually can see on their own what you are saying it the truth. In many respects it can call for at least a bit of soul searching on their part. That can be troubling for them, in order to see what it is about his anti american Christian and anti American idealism that is appealing to them.

    • LOL I can not express how glad it has made me that my comment actually appeared! This new computer has been giving me fits!

      • Glad to see you back on here….

If you’re having trouble with your computer – you did hear Trump braq that his 10-yr-old son Barron is a genius with computers .

Hell – according to The Donald, his 10-yr-old knows more about hacking than most of us – but not quite near as much as his Daddy. Donald knows all there is to know and he doesn’t need any security briefings. He doesn’t want to hear the same words every day.

        WOW – what a weiner – IMHO

BTW – What would happen if we were hired in a new job and then refused to do the basic duty of listening to the daily briefing?

Would we get our butts fired? Trump interviewed for the job of POTUS and now is the time for him to do the job or STFU

    • As you may have noticed, when I talk about the Trump supporters – I usually use the word Kristian for these folks.

There is a difference between a Christian and a Kristian – IMHO

      1) Christian is someone who tries to follow the teachings of Jesus.

      2) Kristian is someone who uses the good reputation of Jesus in order to push their own agenda – which usually involves getting a lot of money – preferably tax free money.

Just because you attend a Christian church does not automatically make you a Christian. Church attendance just makes you a church goer.

Personally, I have come to the sad conclusion that we have way too many Kristians and not enough true Christians.

  7. Indy, who’s teenager is not? I at times end up calling my granddaughters to come over to help me!

  8. If you missed the speech Meryl Streep made tonight at the Golden Globe awards you really missed something you would like to hear! Her speech decimates Trump without ever mentioning his name. It’s good guys!
