Change the guns in today’s photo to knives. There’s a new story to tell.
The neighbor kid across the street who’s 14 and has ADHD, among other problems, has a “pocket knife” that he likes to use to taunt my 9-year-old ADHD grandson. I finally grew tired of it last week and politely asked to see the knife. The blade is a good 5 inches, and I told him that he’s carrying an illegal knife and should put it away. If someone saw him flashing it around and reported him, he could be in trouble. According to Kansas law, the blade was too long. I even checked on the Kansas law to make sure. 4″ maximum blade length, no switchblades, no “fixed” blade, and a few other things.
Then the other day, I found this.
New Kansas law legalizes more kinds of knives
July 28
The Associated Press
TOPEKA — Kansas residents may now carry switchblades, daggers and other types of knives in most public places without fear of arrest under a new law that a lobbying group says makes Kansas one of the nation’s blade-friendliest states.
Legislation lifting the state’s prohibition on several types of knives was signed by Gov. Sam Brownback in April and took effect July 1. The Senate approved it 40-0 after it was amended to clarify that school districts, jails and juvenile detention facilities could keep their bans in place. The House passed it 95-26.
The driving force was a national group called Knife Rights, which contends the Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear bladed instruments as well as firearms.
Knife Rights lobbyist Todd Rathner, who traveled to Topeka to speak for House Bill 2033, praised the Kansas law’s prohibition on enforcement by local governments of any type of knife ordinance.
“In terms of knife law, Kansas is darn near perfect now,” Rathner said.
According to Knife Rights, Kansas joined Arizona, Utah, New Hampshire, Georgia, Alaska and Tennessee as states that have enacted such “pre-emption” statutes preventing regulation of knives.
“In some places it’s an incremental task,” Rathner said of promoting the right to carry any type of knife. “In other places like Kansas we can accomplish a lot more in a single legislative session.”
The Kansas Association of Police Chiefs testified against the bill. Rathner said that should not concern the public because he has heard from law enforcement officers anecdotally that kitchen knives are more often used in crimes than the types that were previously banned.
Opposition in the Kansas House came partly from lawmakers reluctant to remove local authority to regulate knives.
“I think when we say local control is important we should vote that way and that just isn’t happening very often,” said Rep. Annie Tietze, a Democrat from Topeka.
Other House Democrats cited safety issues. Jim Ward, a former Wichita prosecutor, said switchblades were banned decades ago because they were used mostly by gangs and criminals. Ward said the potential for harm from the weapons outweighs any good from legalizing them.
But proponents said switchblades can be useful for emergency workers, farmers and others who need to open a knife with one hand while holding something with the other.
I guess this means I can carry one of my 7″ daggers around in my purse.
So everyone who is ‘skeered’ to leave their home unarmed can now add a BIG knife to their arsenal of just in case weaponry. No training or licensing or background checks or limitations for at least being sane and not a convicted criminal??
Yep. In our militarized world everyone needs to be well armed. Surely someone will be able to easily sort out the armed good guys from the armed bad guys, right!? Because if you are unable to behave in a civilized manner you definitely don’t need to learn such silliness as “how to win friends and influence people,” you only need ‘equalizers.’ Who needs peace, kindness, tolerance, respect for yourself and others?
As to “sane” that was one of the most striking things, when told what were signs of having a problem. I soon noticed that most everyone else was also suffering the same signs and symptoms. That is when I concluded I was just more normal than mentally impaired!
You suffered a heart attack and were without oxygen for awhile so you had to work hard at rehab to get the connections back. Your health challenges never had anything to do with a lack of sanity, just getting the electrical system, the relays and circuits back up and running! You’ve always made more sense than most folks, and have more kindness, understanding and love to offer than about anyone!
After reading the comments to an opinion by Opinionated Democrat on FB, I’m leaning toward not raising the minimum wage. What needs to be done is to start at the top. Tax the hell out of corporations and tax the money they hide in foreign banks. Make them pay penalties for moving their factories to foreign companies. Jail them, if necessary. Fix the banking industry. Economically force them to lower their income that’s stolen form the workers. Until all of these things are done, raising the minimum wage isn’t going to make a difference.
As soon as they run through the world’s poor and struggling, moving from country to country in their quest for serfs, I think the few at the top will soon need to start eating one another. They’ve taken until there’s nothing else to take from all who aren’t one of them.

Ronald Reagan.
When standing your ground – does that mean it is legal to be the aggressor and then claim that you feared for your life just because you were itching to pull the trigger?
You have to be sure you murder the other person and there are no witnesses. Then the only story is yours and you get the advantage of reasonable doubt.
I think it takes a “special” person to kill another human being. I don’t think you’re that kind of special.
To be honest – I think I am capable of killing another human being if they were hurting my kids or grandkids.
I have been yelling non-stop about these child molesters and those who cover up their crimes.
In that case – I do think I am capable of pulling the trigger. There is nothing lower in my book than a child molester – including those who cover up their crimes.
I’ve said this before – I am not a gun owner. I was raised around guns – hunting rifles and target shooting pistols.
But….the people back in the 50’s and 60’s RESPECTED the power of their guns.
We didn’t have people out walking around with their gun on their hip trying to pass for the Sheriff of Dodge City.
The majority of men back in my childhood did not feel so inadequate in other areas of their lives that they felt they needed to feel the cold steel in some damn gun.
BUT……if someone threatens my kids or grandkids – THEN I would gladly get any gun and use it.
TO me….that is what is standing your ground should be – protecting lives.
But …hey….if we were allowed to shoot all child molesters (and those who knowingly cover up that crime) ….would there be a Catholic Church today?
As you might notice – I have NOT forgotten why the Catholic Church was successfully sued in a court of law.
It just amazes me how so many people can look the other way when it comes to THEIR church leaders………but yet a lot of these same folks HATE all Muslims.

Kansas…it can’t get much crazier.
Comments?
well In order to carry your 7″ dagger wouldn’t that mean you would have to take something out…. Like your 18 ” barrel luger!
So everyone who is ‘skeered’ to leave their home unarmed can now add a BIG knife to their arsenal of just in case weaponry. No training or licensing or background checks or limitations for at least being sane and not a convicted criminal??
What could go wrong?
No mention of age restrictions in the article. I haven’t dug any deeper. I’m still a bit flabbergasted, as my mother would say.
What’s next? Catapults? Atomic weaponry?
I have enough trouble with my 2 grandsons and knives. This new law is not something I needed to hear.
Yep. In our militarized world everyone needs to be well armed. Surely someone will be able to easily sort out the armed good guys from the armed bad guys, right!? [sarcasm off]

Right. Or the unarmed. See Martin v. Zimmerman.
[more sarcasm off]

Normal. What is that exactly?

Michele Bachman
Is it just me or is it not funny to joke about bombing the Soviet Union?
Seriously – Reagan was the president of the United States of America and this is what he classified as a joke?
Reagan was a highly over-rated imbecile – IMHO.
Let’s not forget – this clown also seriously tried to classify ketchup as a vegetable for school lunches.
What a D-O-O-F-U-S

I just don’t understand that thinking.
