  1. Today, March 23rd, 2012 is the Affordable Care Act’s two year anniversary.

The new law is making health care work better for all of us, even if you already have insurance. It puts the health of your family first—ensuring access to free preventive care and protecting consumers from insurance company abuses.

    It also provides:

    Benefits for all Americans:
-32 million: Number of Americans who will access affordable health coverage thanks to President Obama’s health care law.

    Benefits for young people:
-2.5 million: Number of young people who have been able to stay on their parents’ health insurance thanks to the Affordable Care Act

    Benefits for seniors:
-The Affordable Care Act is making Medicare stronger, and helps you save on the services you already rely on.

    • The Affordable Care Act is not perfect legislation, but it is the only reason many people are currently insured. After a century of nothing, it’s a good start!

  2. The myth of freedom in the land of the free

The US touts itself as the land of free, but it has laws which are designed to crush criticisms of the state.

(from the article): “Moreover, income for the 99 per cent grew by 20 per cent from 1993-2000, but during the Bush years, it grew by only 6.8 per cent. It’s worth saying again that this is not a natural occurrence of the free and open marketplace. The upward redistribution of wealth is the concrete result of politics and policy – one might even say socialism for the rich, capitalism for everyone else.

Or should I say authoritarianism for everyone else. Since the terrorist attacks of 2001, the US has spent about $635bn to militarise the country’s local police forces. It’s ostensibly an effort to better prepare communities in case of another attack. But, as Stephan Salisbury reportedrecently, there has been a cultural transformation, too. “The truth is that virtually the entire apparatus of government has been mobilised and militarised right down to the university campus.” When the state makes a fetish of security, as the US has, it becomes hard to tell the difference between acts of civil disobedience and terrorism.”

  3. We must remain ever vigilant!

Currently New Hampshire is one of eight states that allow gay marriage. Lawmakers approved civil unions in 2007 and then in 2009 approved gay marriage, which went into effect Jan. 1, 2010.

Since that time, 1,906 same-sex couples have wed under the law.

But the law’s opponents don’t give up and continue to introduce bills to take away rights the state has already granted. After two hours of debate and 10 votes, the House Wednesday decided to keep the state’s gay marriage law in place.

Exhausting, isn’t it. Just like the battles women fight, over and over, for reproductive freedom, my people have to scratch and claw and fight just to keep the few hard-won gains we have. Then, if we have time, money and energy left, we try to make tiny bits of progress.

We need all the help we can get.

    • prairie pond

I read this thing on Yahoo news yesterday about some poor, poor couple who could barely make ends meet on a combined income of $100,000. Imagine trying to feed a family of four on $21,000 a year which is $10 an hour at 40 hours a week. Even double that for two incomes and it’s half of the $100K they were whining about.

I guess no one thinks we taxpayers are funding another subsidy for corporations and businesses with food stamps and social service programs like Medicaid. They get to pay their workers a non-living wage and taxpayers support their employees for the money businesses refuse to pay for labor.

I look at social service programs that way, not as a reward for lazy people who don’t want to work. I forget the statistics, but a good chunk of those who use safety net programs ARE working. Just for crappy wages and no benefits.

      Walmart anyone?

  4. Good information, good charts that show the facts —

The Worst Part of Paul Ryan’s Budget

Paul Ryan’s budget takes us back to 1950. That’s not a metaphor. That’s a statistic. In 1950, Medicare didn’t exist, Medicaid didn’t exist, and Social Security was 3% the size of defense spending.

    • I asked this yesterday but no one responded. I’m still wondering if I’m seeing this correctly.

On one hand the republicans say the government can’t require everyone to buy insurance (from an exchange of private insurance companies) because that’s unconstitutional. Right?

Yet, the Paul Ryan budget which ends Medicare as we know it requires seniors to buy from an exchange of private insurance companies that will be set up. Right?

      Can someone explain this?

      • prairie pond

Only in wingnuttia could that be coherent public policy, fnord.

They hate insurance mandates. Until they don’t.

I think it’s all kabuki, with the insurance companies and their PACs making out like bandits in the end. “Well, those mean ol’ courts are MAKING us enact mandates.”

        WTF? Jesus wept.

      • indypendent

As I remember it – the health insurance companies wanted those mandates because it is guaranteed revenue.

I also remember when what we got as health care reform was originally a Republican idea.

But, hey, these same wing nuts still try to say Reagan was a great president. Reagan’s accomplishments:

        1) ran up huge deficit
        2) started the War on the Working Class
        3) raised taxes 11 times – and still managed to run deficits every year
        4) gave weapons to Iran
        5) fed the military industrial complex beast so that it grew even bigger
        6) always had that damn smirky smile on his face while looking for the place in our backs to stab us
        7) Oh, did I mention he also had a clotheshorse wife – designer horse, that is. And she tried to pass herself off as just one of the girls.
        8) And last, but not least, Reagan invited Jerry Falwell (Moral Majority) into the inner circle of the Republican Party – and we are seeing the result of that stupid idea today.

Reagan did alot of damage to this country – he should have stayed where he did some good – as the union leader of his fellow actors where he used collective bargaining to get health benefits.

Wow – ST. Ronnie was a damn union-loving, collective bargaining-loving, demanding health benefits Liberal?

So – you see – pretending that the ACA’s mandate is unconstitutional and their own planned Medicare mandate as okay is nothing more than what these CONS have done along – they simply do not recognize the fact they are hypocrits and/or liars.

went swimming last night at the Y and some one pulled the fire alarm and man I only thought it was cold out until I had to go into the parking lot without time to dry off or even grab my towel. Ok claim down some so the death penalty for the person might not be warnted? But believe me based on the group that was standing in the parking the thought of what should happen to the person did lead that way! Cold wet people just don’t have much of a sense of humor I guess…. I didn’t.

    • I can imagine! Whether it was wet from the pool (like you) or they had worked up a sweat, that night air would have been an unpleasant shock! Hope you don’t catch a cold.

I had to give in and turn the furnace back on. Looks like it’s gonna warm back up over the next few days and I can go back to complaining about how warm it is. 🙂

      • wicked

It’s great. I’m very happy for those whose insurance now covers the basics that should have always been covered. But it doesn’t yet help those who can’t afford insurance. Maybe in another 1 1/2+ years, there’ll be real change. However, if the Republicans get into the WH, kiss your benefits goodbye and prepare to be totally ripped off.

      • wicked

First, I apologize for my reply ending up in the wrong place. That’s not where it started, just where it ended.

And, fnord, I broke down and turned on my furnace, too. At least it wasn’t running all the time, once it warmed the place up a bit.

    • prairie pond

There ought to be a special place in hell for the asshole who did that! Probably a kid, so maybe not the death penalty, but there’d have been a butt-whoopin’ at our house if I’d done that as a kid!

      • indypendent

You’d be suprised at so-called adults who would do that and then try to blame a kid.

I’ve seen some pretty big and definitely over legal age people who act worse than kids.

    • wicked

You take care of yourself, R.D.! Getting a chill isn’t healthy. (shaking finger) And maybe they’ll find out who the perp of this nasty trick was, and he’ll get more than a finger shake.

      • R.D. Liebst

Thank you all, I think I will survive and other then a little head congestion I am Ok. Yeap it does get me what some think is a funny idea or a good one.
Be is taking your dog on the roof for a family trip or some things said then backed off as if ” Gee get a sense of humor will ya!”.

      • indypendent

Or like those White Republicans that got caught sending out racist emails about their President?

And then Newt having the nerve to demand an apology from President Obama for some joke Robert DeNiro said at some fundraiser?

And let’s not forget Rush’s infamous singing his little Magic Negro song…

You mean – that kind of sense of humor?

  6. prairie pond

Good one. (wiping tears of laughter)

Here’s my boy Ricky = double digit lead in Louisiana.

IIRC – Louisiana voted overwhelming to reelect Sen. David Vitter. We all remember Vitter don’t we? The guy that had the prostitute’s pimp on speed dial? LOL

Oh, wait, but Ricky wants to outlaw porn – and Rush calls any woman he deems unworth of him to be a prostitute – but yet Senators can get away with – and even be rewarded with another term – even though they display such abhorrent sexual behavior?

No wonder Ricky is leading in the double digits there – those Religious types are usually the ones in the front pew thinking that God does not know what they really do once they leave the church doors.

    • wicked

Louisiana is predominately Catholic, too. It’s more likely they believe that if they don’t mention it in confession, it “never happened.” 😉

      • indypendent

Hey, if the Catholic Church condones annuling long-term marriages that produced kids just so that Daddy can make his new trophy wife into a ‘good’ Catholic – I see where the little pinheads get the idea that if they don’t talk about it – it never happened.

It must be nice to be able to put on those blinders to the truth…

      • prairie pond

        Heheh. Cajun background check.

“Now, whose boy are you? Who yo daddy?”

        “who’s yo mama?”

        “Is she catholic?”

        “Can she make a roux?”

If the answer is “yes” to the last two, the reply is “you ok then, mi cher.”

      • indypendent

Maybe because the answer to the first question might cause a ruckus if the other women find out their baby’s daddy has other babies?

But all is okay – the guy in the funny hat and golden slippers will make it all just a dream ……it never happened… never happened……

Yeah, Dorothy, just click your heels and you can be transported back home to where you can make your world just the way you want it….

    • R.D. Liebst

And the sales of etech-o-sketch has gone up seem that it was all but forgotten except for the candidates! Thinking about it maybe my grandkids would like one? Sure would beat some video game..

      • indypendent

I heard today the company sent a box full of Etch a Sketch toys to the candidates to thank them for the free publicity.

IIRC – the stock of this company went up 200% the day this hit the news…

  8. (from the article): Speaking of a piece of Alaska legislation Rep. Dick (what an appropriate name) said, “If I thought that the man’s signature was required… required, in order for a woman to have an abortion, I’d have a little more peace about it…” I suppose a rapist would be more than willing to identify himself in order to do that, or a father or uncle guilty of incest. Or a husband who has raped his wife. Can the men involved in a gang rape – a fraternity for example – send in a joint permission slip or do they need to send individual permission slips?

    • indypendent

Oh, but you don’t understand. Women get abortions as their way of birth control because they are sluts and prostitutes.

How dare these women get pregnant…. (eyes roll)

One might even think alot of immaculate conception was going on – the way these Republicans talk about women. One might even get the feeling that no man was involved in getting these women pregnant – because these folks sure don’t mention the man’s part in all these conceptions – huh?

Republicans need to learn the basics: sperm + egg = baby

Instead of immaculate conception – there ain’t nothing going on here but ejaculation conception.

And it’s about time we held the shooter (ejaculator) responsible.

      • indypendent

As for Republicans holding rapists and incestors accountable – don’t hold your breath on that one.

Kinda like don’t hold your breath on Republicans voting to give women equal pay.

        It just ain’t gonna happen.

      • prairie pond

“Republicans need to learn the basics: sperm + egg = baby”

Maybe that’s why they hate science?

If the equation ever became “egg + egg = baby” a lot of men would find themselves childless. Which would suit some of them just fine.

      • indypendent

By the looks of some of these men – that would suit me fine also.

And they would be doing the world a favor also – they would be not be allowed to breed.

Some people should never have kids…

    • R.D. Liebst

Shoot if my wife had to have mine nothing would get done. LOL a sign I must be getting better? The times that people are looking to my wife to see if it is Ok instead of just taking my word for it. Are getting fewer and fewer, which is the pitts it was kind of nice not being responsible for anything.

I stood a stand today, went to Wal-mart and bought me a new watchie because I could not set the old one and it was hard to read. I am a real man today!!!! Now if I could only remember to lift the seat to pee…Kidding I am a well trained husband@

      • prairie pond

I can tell you are getting better, R.D. Your great sense of humor is getting sharpened up.

It is so good to have you back!

  9. prairie pond

  10. Every red state has doubled down on efforts to legislate lady parts and control women!

So, now we have God’s favorite ‘boy’ giving the Broncos the fire and brimstone because they treated a fellow Christian badly.

Oh give me a fricking break….

Not a word from good ol’ Pattie about the obscene money these football players are making and will continue to make – but Pattie is upset because a fellow Christian is being persecuted – just give me a fricking break…..

  12. prairie pond

    Poor persecuted majority.

Have you been following the Trayvon Martin shooting tragedy? I watched President Obama address this issue and I thought he handled it perfectly.

It was very compelling when President Obama said that if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon. That, in a nutshell, is going to make the Far Right Wing Obama-Hating Religious Rightie with their Tightie Whities go absolutely beserk.

I’ve already read where Sean Hannity called this shooting a horrible accident. And Fox News Geraldo Riviera said that the hoodie this 17-yr-old kid was wearing was the problem.

Seriously, folks, seriously? A damn hoodie? I wonder if Trayvon had been a white boy wearing a hoodie – would he have been followed by the self-appointed neighborhood watch guy with a loaded gun?

I listened to the 911 tapes a few days ago – it was clearly stated that this Zimmerman guy (watch guy and shooter) was told by the 911 dispatcher that he was not to follow the guy – but yet Zimmerman kept following Trayvon. And then gunshots are heard – no weapon on this kid – but yet the shooter is allowed to claim self-defense under this Florida law – STand you Ground?

While I believe we should all have the right to protect our families – I do not believe that when you’re following someone -and after being by 911 to not follow the guy – then where is the self-defense argument here?

Expect political fallout from this one boys and girls – Jeb Bush, as governor, signed this law – and just expect this to be a part of the election rhetoric.

As we have seen – Fox News is already on the bandwagon to try to paint this as some accident or even caused by some damn hoodie.

Please, folks, do they think we are ALL that stupid?

    • R.D. Liebst

OMG I am setting here wearing a hoodie, everyone live in fear!!!
I is a gangset mo-fo and only wish I could remember where I hide my gat and could find a reason to be Public enemy number 1. Later maybe we could ride the hood in my wife’s tracker, otherwise it is my motor cycle and I would hate to see the fight on who gets the back seat.

  14. prairie pond

Heeeee. It’s hard out here for a pimp!

  15. indypendent

You know what makes me really mad about this Trayvon Martin shooting? It has been 3 weeks since the actual incident happened. It has taken the public outrage and protests to bring attention to this tragedy.

And then some damn fools trivialize this tragedy down to the victim wore a hoodie so that was what caused this horrible tragedy?

How sad to impune the dignity of a young man’s life to what he was wearing was the reason he was murdered.

    • Several of the recordings I heard were made when neighbors called 911 — in every one of them you could hear screams for help and then the gunshot. The instant you heard the gunshot the screams stopped. That combined with Zimmerman pursuing the young man, even after being told not to, makes it seem planned to me. Isn’t that first degree murder?

  16. Shake the Romney Sketch to watch his position change! 🙂

  17. I am SOOOOO far behind in my blog reading!!! Have gotten myself into all sorts of political wranglings over on Facebook. I miss reading what everyone here has to say, but seems like the only time to read is in the middle of the night and I tend to headplant on the keyboard. Just wanted to tell you, I miss you, and I’ll be back! 🙂

Indy, this is for you (everyone else can read it to):

Moonshadow – thanks for this link…. I’ve only skimmed through it but it looks like it is somewhere I can call home.

This past week has been a depressing one for me (as you can probably tell by my posting on Wednesday?)

Sometimes I just want to give up and let these Fundies win – just let them get in there and do their worst.

But, I know that is not what our country can withstand – we are in too much trouble to let a bunch of buffoons take over.

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that made me just laugh..

I’m looking foward to the Rapture – then these idiots will leave me alone.

  19. Indy, you might want to take a look at Luke 17:34-35 in the King James. You may be surprised to discover that at least some sexually active gays and lesbians are acceptable to God. I kid you not.

    • Hi, Ron.

I am a graduate of a Fundamental Baptist College – in the mid-70’s. I married a Baptist preacher – trouble was, he was a Southern Baptist and I was a Fundamental – so you know what happened – don’t you?

The biggest Holy War hit our suburb of Chicago and we had families divided in who was supporting who.

My husband kept preaching in his church for about 7 months and then we both just left and have not looked by since.

That is not to say we lost our faith – because we did not. We lost our trust and faith in the man-made churches.

Religion is man-made but Faith is spiritual. Never confuse the two because religion is some screwed up B.S.
