  1. “Too bad the only people who know how to run the country are busy driving cabs and cutting hair.” — George Burns

I think if George were to make that statement today he would include those who are busy blogging. 😉

  2. Keeping ‘things’ in perspective —

  3. Bookmark this. In this sure to be nasty campaign year, this will be a reference to, again, keep ‘things’ in perspective:

Democrats Release GOP ‘Hypocrite’ List After Rangel, Massa Ethics Charges

    • wicked

Breach of ethics happens on both sides of the political aisle. Action should be taken, no matter what letter follows a name. Ignoring things only makes things worse and sends a message that breaking the rules is okay.

I’m really, really tired of this b.s.

      • wicked

Maybe the question put to members of Congress is if they would allow their children to break the rules.

Why do we consider these people priviledged? They’re supposed to be working FOR US, yet we allow them to continuously work against us in their best interest.

    • I agree, wicked! It seems by the time an elected person is charged with ethics violations they’ve already needed to be gone for quite some time. I know I’m not following the innocent until proven guilty mantra, but it’s way past time for them to quit protecting one another and get rid of ALL the bad apples!

Obviously, the voters don’t pay enough attention and don’t get rid of them efficiently enough.

      • I am not going to quit celebrating yet! Kansas voters GOT RID OF TIAHRT! Woo Hoo!

      • I am aware that we couldn’t have done this without Moran’s help.

But, if the only way we can get rid of them is to allow them to take one anther out — I accept that as the gift we were given!

  4. In other happy news recently —

    Prop 8 out!

    Kagan in!

    😉

The world may not be ‘comin up roses’ yet, but there are positives and I refuse to be bogged down by the doom and gloom to the point I can’t recognize good news!

    • wicked

      LOL

Yes, there’s always good and bad. If not, we wouldn’t have anything to complain about. 🙂 And just how much fun would that be?

So let’s celebrate the good and fix the bad to make it good, if possible. Or ignore the bad, if it comes right down to it…which would mean needing anti-depressants.

  5. When ALL the truth comes out about the Bush administration let’s pay attention and learn the lessons. He did a bunch wrong and caused a bunch of harm. Let’s not sweep this under the rug so we aren’t able to see the signs and prevent a repeat!

More CIA smoke and mirrors: According to the Associated Press, President Bush brought four of the most highly wanted alleged al Qaeda terrorists to Guantanamo Bay years earlier than reported, in 2003—and then quickly sent them back overseas to CIA black sites when his administration began to fear that the Supreme Court would give them access to lawyers. Overseas, the men were subject to the so-called enhanced interrogation techniques for two more years; had they stayed at Gitmo, the court would have given them access to lawyers just three months later. “There was obviously a fear that everything that had been done to them might come out,” says one of the alleged terrorist’s lawyers. Another law professor who has represented detainees says, “This was all just a shell game to hide detainees from the courts.”

While all this may be true, many Republicans and non-party-labeled Americans would say – so what?

People don’t care unless it hits them in their own face.

I see this as a moral issue gutting our entire mantra as a self-professing Christian country that prides itself on fairness. What is fair about moving around prisoners into these black-hole CIA prisons?

But, again, like I stated above – alot of Americans really don’t care.

  6. indypendent

If we really had strict ethics adherence in Congress, I suspect a majority of the current elected officials would be gone.

I would like to know why the Ethics Committee is made up by fellow colleagues who might have a political motive?

Why not make the Ethics Committee a non-partisan, non-former elected officials going doing the investigation and then come up with charges.

There is too much politics in all this crap. And as we have all said at one time or another – our politics has become deeply divided. So in the end – it’s a tit for tat game.

A Republican gets caught – then a Democrat gets caught and the cycle continues.

  7. The news just keeps getting better for TheVeryLightCar! In the picture at the link, my brother-in-law is the man on the far right.

“What happens when you offer sports-car guys a clean-sheet, dream-big opportunity to design and build the car of the future? They dominate the competition, of course.

Oliver Kuttner had the vision; his team at Edison2 made it happen. Barring any glitches in final testing, they will be in Washington in September to accept the $5-million first prize in the X Prize Foundation race to build vehicles that are fuel-efficient (100 mpg energy equivalent), meet U.S. safety and emission standards, and are production-capable.

After shakedown testing, knockout qualifying and finals at Michigan International Speedway, 127 of the 136 X Prize competitors are out, and only Edison2’s two entries remain in the mainstream class for four-passenger cars. They must pass one more stage – dyno testing – to validate the track results.

Although the rules favoured electric cars, Edison2 wanted to build a car that people would buy. So they made a challenging task even tougher.”

What will the base purchase price be if and when they get it to market?

Or do they even know yet?

      • They don’t know yet, but it looks like this is actually going to contribute to our next cars, and not too far in the future!

The prize will be presented next month in Washington DC, by the president! Oliver Kuttner, who brought in all his friends and great talents (they’re a bunch of old guys who have worked in every type of racing) has put up his own money and throughout this year there have been several times when he gave the guys a paycheck and then said he would let them know when it was safe to cash it. They’ve really truly put their hearts into this, and because of that we Americans are going to benefit from their ideas.

Let’s see… I have 4 grandkids I haul around. Does it come with an attached sidecar? 🙂

      • indypendent

That’s what I was thinking . With my one grandkid and the other one due in 2 months, I’m thinking just a quick trip to the store will definitely not be worth the hassle with those car seats!

  8. Remember the name of this PAC so you can always recognize exactly who is behind it!

The Tea Party Express leader ousted after racially charged remarks about the NAACP is back with a new PAC. The former Tea Party Express chairman is said to be teaming up with two fellow conservative activists to create Citizens for Constitutional Liberty, a new political action committee that plans to support conservative candidates and promote grassroots activism among Tea Partiers.

    • Don’t forget when Mark Williams was Foxnews’ main man, and the stupid tea party express bus foxnews paid for traveled the country spreading nonsense.

      • indypendent

With Mark Williams and Andrew Breitbart – the Tea Party/Republicans think they have died and gone to Heaven.

    • Maybe we’ll see more GOP / Tea Party candidates like Sharron Angle from Nevada! This really truly should have been the year Harry Reid lost his seat! And look what the Tea Party did.

      • indypendent

She was the topic of discussion on another blog.

Seems Sharron Angle wants preachers to be able to endorse candidates from the pulpit and to make adoption by gay couples illegal.

This woman also believe in NO exceptions to abortions – including rape and incest.

3 for 3 – is it any wonder she is the golden girl of the Tea Party Set?

      • wicked

And when some of those laws come back to bite her in the @ss, do we get to laugh?

      • wicked

But will it only be the preachers she and a select few get to choose? Or will this be open to all preachers?

Silly conservatives. They think all preachers are at their beck and call. Makes me giggle.

Well mom want to go to Greenwhich and she is a danger on the highway so I am driving her.
Yeah I am about blind so far in one eye but still it is better then her trying to drive herself.
Later…..STAY OFF OF EAST KELLOGG A HALF BLIND DRIVER AND A DRIVER WHO DRIFTS INTO THE TRAFFIC ON BOARD!

  10. I have an appointment with the eye doctor today, but I wanted to share this with you, my friends. Sometimes when you are having a bad day, it pays to check your twitter feed. Thanks goes to Ezra Klein for sharing the link to this delightful article about one of my all-time heros–Fred Rogers.

    http://www.pittsburghinwords.org/tom_junod.html

    • Get well, Paula! Quickly!

      • Thanks, fnord. This is not something that will ever “get well” but it is treatable. I had to go back for a recheck to make sure the treatment plan was working according to…well, plan. Thanks for the well wishes!

    • I’m still reading, but so far my favorite is the story about Mr. Rogers asking the young man to pray for him, and how both thought the other must be very close to God. This is good stuff! Thanks for sharing.

    • indypendent

Thanks for sharing this link Paula.

      • I know that when I was a teenager it was very fashionable to make fun of Mr. Rogers and make cruel inferences. But, as an adult, I did some research about him for a school paper and I was very impressed about his sincerity and generosity. There are so many more stories like the ones in the article about the kind words and caring gestures he made that impacted the lives of children. He was truly committed to making childhood a time of wonder and security. And you just can’t argue with the goodness and value of that.

  11. More good news and about a Kansan!

    =====

The article did not say but Ms Angle was answering some questionnaire put out by some right-wing conservative group – so?

Ms Angle claims to be a Southern Baptist and a very right-wing Republican.

The article did not address this but I wonder – if Ms Angle wants preachers to endorse candidates from their pulpit, can I assume she is willing for the churches to be taxed then?

I suspect that is when she uses the Separation of Church and State line when it comes to actually paying their way.

Isn’t it funny how these right-wingers can yell for the Separation clause when they want to use it but yet still try to say that there is no such Separation clause when it comes to preachers stomping for their God’s candidate?

Cherry-picking, you think? I suspect that is also what they do with the Ten Commandments. I’ve seen alot of these right-wingers bear false witness and not blink an eye.

Just saw this on the Cox Connection website as national news and thought it might be interesting to read.

Seems both sides of the gay marriage issue have their concerns about the judge that ruled against Prop 8.

How can they both be correct in their assessment?

Or could it be the judge simply went by the constitutional law in this case. I’m sure, the Supreme Court will be hearing this – but even then, will the debate ever really be over?

    http://ww2.cox.com/myconnection/kansas/today/news/national/article.cox?articleId=D9HE5VL82&moduleType=apNews

    • I think it will become settled law, but those who hold biases won’t let go of them.

bias: A preference or an inclination, especially one that inhibits impartial judgment.

    • itolduso

The “guess” or “open secret” whichever that the Judge might have been gay should not be an issue in the case. Judges often have to separate their opinions from the law, and follow the law. So it always has been, so it will always be.

Lawyers, from all sides, throw crap out there all the time, in order to persuade for their client. That’s their job. Both sides are positioning for the apellate court fights to come. And maybe, some political “advantage” for whatever side they happen to be on.

  14. Not sure how I feel about this. I think slightly sick to my stomach, about the same as I would feel if she were listed as a representative of women…

Ann Coulter To Headline ‘Homocon’ Event For Gay Conservatives

Conservative pundit and unlikely gay ally Ann Coulter is set to headline the first annual Homocon, “a party to celebrate gay conservatives” put on by GOProud, the “only national organization representing gay conservatives.” The festivities are scheduled to take place in New York City on September 25.

Well, I could say something here of what I have been been suspicious about for several years, but I’ll do as my momma taught me – when you can’t say something nice – don’t say anything.

  15. WSClark

I took upon myself to change our header. The photo is of our President at his victory speech in Grant Park on Election night 2008.

If you like the change I made, say so. If not, say so also.

My intent is to remind us of our resolve on that historic night.

I am not trying to “force” anything, but I felt it was a time for a “change!”

    • wicked

I don’t even remember what the other was, how’s that for paying attention?

Looks good from my perspective, Will.

    • I would prefer something more general, but will go with the consensus.

The only other time I remember the header changing was when Sekan put that wild man (John Brown?) (the one he currently uses at his blog). I didn’t like that one.

  16. So, it’s changed back, but not everyone got to see it and give input??
