On Forgiveness. . .

forgiveness-cartoon[1]See these thoughts on the health benefits of forgiveness at MayoClinic.com.  I used to consider the benefits obtained by the “forgiven” outweighed those received by the “forgiver” – this articles suggests a much different view.

Somewhere here down in my basement, I have a book-length treatment on forgiveness – I need to get it out and re-read it.  I have been thinking about this subject a lot here lately.

Interestingly, as I am writing this, NPR has a story on how Roman Polanski was swept up in Switzerland this weekend for a charge of having sex with a thirteen year old girl in the 1970’s.  I guess the victim, now in her 40’s, has favored dropping the charges for some time.

  1. Hardest person to forgive is ourselves.

  2. Coming to that point of true forgiveness must be peaceful. I’m not sure I’ve ever been there. There are people who have injured me and I’ve moved on, but I’m not at all sure I’ve forgiven.

The literature suggests you would, if you could. Forgiving is not forgetting, that is an important thing to remember.

  4. Commenting on an earlier point; forgiving myself can be difficult, forgiving those who wronged me is/are harder.

Roman Polanski is not answering to his victim, but to US law which he fled. Polanski, and his enablers in the press take Samantha Geimer’s decency as evidence that she wasn’t harmed, but she was and Polanski invades her privacy every time he tries to evade the consequences of his crime.
some of the issues, and lots of links here–

    • Thanks for sharing Ninja. You may be correct. I have a difficult time defending people who raped 13 year olds. If she were my daughter, it would be very difficult for me.

I don’t know the story on why she wants the charges dropped. I will read your link.

  6. Excellent link. Suggest all read it. Thanks for providing it Ninja!
