equinoxThe September Equinox

On the equinox, the sun rises directly in the east and sets directly in the west. This is true for both the fall and spring equinoxes. So on two days of the year you can find the exact cardinal directions of East and West by using the sun. The ancients did this when they set up their calendars at Stonehenge and the Mayan pyramid, among others.

The autumnal equinox for the northern hemisphere is the vernal equinox for the southern hemisphere.  This must mean our friend Loon is welcoming Spring!

  1. Emergency work where I am employed is always busiest around the Equinox. I think perfect balance and symmetry is inherently troubling to people. Just an untested theory, though…

Is there a full-moon effect like I’ve always heard?

      • lilacluvr

I don’t know how scientific this is, but in nursing homes it seems whenever there is a full moon, alot of the residents seem to get hyper and agitated- and then add the staff to that mix – and we really have a rockin’ good time.

      • Bad Biker

Well, I don’t know about you, but about the time of the full moon, my knuckles get hairy, my incisors start to grow and I have this strange desire to howl at the moon.

Scares the crap out of Rufus.

      • What I have noticed, not empirically supported though, is that the first few (say five) days before a full moon are the busiest – the day of and after, not so much…

A little tale of Stonehenge. (Maybe this will bring out PrairiePond.)

    • Thank you, wicked!! I had never heard it, loved it, needed the laugh!

      • wicked

I love Eddie! (For those who haven’t witnessed his “style” before, he is not gay. He’s a crossdresser. An ‘executive’ crossdesser, he explains.) I LOVE his makeup!! LOL

Seriously, he knows a bit about history and makes it fun. His take on the Pilgrims and the Indians is hilarious, along with his comments on Hitler. I drag out the DVD a couple of times a year, just because I know he’ll make me laugh, even though I’ve seen it tons of times.

      • wicked

I need to correct myself. Eddie is an “executive transvestite.” My apologies to Eddie. 🙂

  3. I miss PrairiePond so much. I worry about her too.

    • The world has spun out of control, hasn’t it? Did we get off soon enough?

      • I’ve read a lot about Sheila C. Bair since the bubble burst. The more I read, the better I like her. Regardless of her being appointed by Bush, she has shown a tendency to side with what’s right for middle America, not Wall Street.

She was one of the few that tried warn of the housing crisis before it happened. In my opinion, she would do a better job than our current resident Wall Street/Washington financial “leaders.”

Anyone interested would do well to read Wiki:

Something I doubt Fox will report on but a speaker at the value voters conference stated that Pornography
causes one to turn Gay. What troubles me is how many years must someone watch porn before they turn gay? Do I have any time left????

Now he was talking about the adolescent boys, so how does he explain Lesbianism? OK the boys are so busy watching porn that the girls are just left alone! Gee maybe it was just me but the girls always seem to want to be left alone? OH… those girls were just gay! Oh that is why they kept telling me to get my jollies watching porn.

Sorry but that claim is so ridiculous I had to have fun with it.

    • So do you ‘catch the gay’ by just touching the disc, do you have to actually watch it and how much? Then do you have to watch everything previously viewed backwards to be ‘cured’?

But ya know what? Some young person in that audience (drug there by the parents no doubt) will now be worried because one time they looked at one of those magazines or caught parts of one of those videos. Worse yet, some young person who already knows their sexuality isn’t hetero will be driven to who knows what in order to keep the secret — since it’s sooooo sinful and all.

How many young lives will this kind of stupidity affect?

BTW, Merry Mabon, everyone! And if you aren’t familiar with Mabon, you can look it up. 😉

    • Thank you, wicked! I love learning new stuff.

      Autumn Equinox

Mabon, (pronounced MAY-bun, MAY-bone, MAH-boon, or MAH-bawn) is the Autumn Equinox. The Autumn Equinox divides the day and night equally, and we all take a moment to pay our respects to the impending dark. We also give thanks to the waning sunlight, as we store our harvest of this year’s crops. The Druids call this celebration, Mea’n Fo’mhair, and honor the The Green Man, the God of the Forest, by offering libations to trees. Offerings of ciders, wines, herbs and fertilizer are appropriate at this time. Wiccans celebrate the aging Goddess as she passes from Mother to Crone, and her consort the God as he prepares for death and re-birth.

Various other names for this Lesser Wiccan Sabbat are The Second Harvest Festival, Wine Harvest, Feast of Avalon, Equinozio di Autunno (Strega), Alben Elfed (Caledonii), or Cornucopia. The Teutonic name, Winter Finding, spans a period of time from the Sabbat to Oct. 15th, Winter’s Night, which is the Norse New Year.

At this festival it is appropriate to wear all of your finery and dine and celebrate in a lavish setting. It is the drawing to and of family as we prepare for the winding down of the year at Samhain. It is a time to finish old business as we ready for a period of rest, relaxation, and reflection.

As in Christianity, there’s a trinity. The Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone, the three stages of womanhood.

Samhain is my favorite and is pronounced sow’ en. (Celtic) It’s one of the four Sabbats in Wicca. Wiccans believe that on Samhain, the veil between the physical world and the spiritual world thins. It’s the time to communicate with those who have gone before. Celebrated when? Why, October 31, of course, the original Halloween.

Wicca is a very interesting, although fairly new religion that’s based on older pagan beliefs. Many of the festivals and holy days of Christianity were taken from those same beliefs.

Am I Wiccan? Ummmm, not really, but I find it fascinating.

And what if the dog was present?

Fnord I think there are videos on the net and in the collections of porn in small towns that answer the question.
    Enough said on that subject!

  8. tosmarttobegop

AS I have said before both of my best friends were raised in Fundie households.
One had pretty normal ideas about sex while the other had some of the oddest ideas.

He actually believed if a man and woman had sex outside of marriage the woman’s head would fall off!
The thought of it for years caused him to panic if a girl came on to him.

The other? Oh he was nothing more then a horn dog!
Maybe it is the difference between fundy Baptist and fundy holiness. One prays for forgiveness and the other thinks “Well since we are already rolling a round on the floor!”.

  9. tosmarttobegop

LOL the one who came from a Pentecostal of holiness family actually live out a old joke one night.
A woman was on fire with the Lord and was running up front when she tripped.
Her dress flew up and over her head as she laid on the floor her butt in the air.

The Preacher shouted he who looks will be struck blind! My friend said a loud “ I’ll risk a eye!”.
Each man in the church stood in a line and took a turn at giving him swats.

Hey, fnord, here are two more YouTube links with Eddie.

    Do you have a flag?

    Cake or Death? (Hitler)

I haven’t found the Pilgrims one yet, but that second one is really good.

  11. wicked

    I found it!!!!

  12. wicked

Ooops! I swear I didn’t grab the imbed link! My apologies, iggy. Luckily it’s short.

Reformers outnumber conservatives at Jenkins Town Hall!!!!!

    • Lawrence has been our state’s one progressive area, I’m glad they didn’t disappoint!

      • wicked

How many parkays can there be?

Did anyone read the comments on that link? There was a comment from a ‘parkay’. Seems he/she doesn’t care for Dennis Moore.

As usual, the CONS in the state are pointing fingers and trying to deflect any “misspeaks” from Ms. Jenkins.

        Interesting stuff.

  14. Here’s a blog I think you’ll find fun. 🙂

  15. lilacluvr

wicked – parkay is an anti-abortion person. And I have tangled with him/her before. One cannot debate with someone who quotes the Bible as their reference.

    • wicked

I know, lilac, which is why I thought it odd to see parkay involved in the health care debate. No mention of abortion, just a rant on Dennis Moore. Or at least it seemed like a rant. It was rather strange.

      • lilacluvr

The latest Republican protesting rant about the health care debate is whether Obama is forcing abortions onto Americans and calling it ‘healthcare’.

I find it really ironic when Republicans say the Democrats are for the ‘culture of death’

But isn’t death the end result of all the wars Republicans have sanctioned – and even blessed – in the name of their God?

I just don’t understand these people who live for war but yet think themselves to be pro-life.

I guess they think that those US bombs are falling and not really doing any damage?

  16. lilacluvr

BTW – wicked – I went onto Payton’s website through the hospital link that you provided. Last time I checked in, it was when Payton was taken off the ventilator and could be held for the first time. I’m glad to hear things are progressing.

To me, the difference between Republicans and Democrats is what type of country we want to live in – a country where everybody has to fend for themselves or a country where its people help one another.

And I choose to live in a country that cares about its people – all its people, not just the ones with money and power.

    • wicked

I saw your note on Payton’s website. I’m so glad you stopped by! She’s making progress, up on the 4th floor now (Cardiac Care) from PICU. That’s the last stop before going home. They’re weaning her off the oxygen, which shouldn’t be hard because the tube keeps slipping out of her nose! Switching IV meds to oral meds and getting her to eat. Once she’ll take the bottle and eat as she should and all else is okay, she can go home!

It’s been a long road. She’s been in KC for a month and a half.

I keep meaning to put some pics on my website, but there are almost 200, so I’ll have to pick the best. Not an easy job.

Thanks to everyone here who have been sending prayers and good thoughts. I know those helped her get through this and fight when she needed to. You’re all good people.

  17. prairiepond

Ooof! Goddam, I love me some Eddie Izzard!

“If you watch half the porn movie, will you become bisexual?”

ROFLMAO! Biker, you crack me up.

Fnord, thanks for missing me. I worry about me too.

    About the porn thing…

Actually, what he said is that all porn is gay porn, because it stirs up those feelings in boys and men who read and watch it. Then they have sex with themselves (yeah, really) and that means they are having sex with a man. Themselves.

Let that sink in for a moment. It’s a swipe not only against porn, but masterbation as well. A twofer. And the guy went on to say that young boys are extremely homophobic, and by linking porn with being gay, it will turn them off porn and masterbation and deepen their already adolescent homophobia.

Matthew Shepard anyone? Just stir up that hatred against gays if that’s what it takes to keep your sons safe from Jenna Jamison and too much wacking.

And you guys wonder why I get so depressed….

Oh, and apparantly, this speaker about porn and homosexuality thinks women dont watch or enjoy porn or masterbate. Or he’s really, really, REALLY turned on by the thought of what lesbians do and doesnt want to discourage that. Typical straight guy.

    BIG eye roll!
