What do you do for a hobby?  I paint rocks, I’ve painted hundreds of rocks.  There’s just no accounting for taste, or lack of (giggle).  It’s relaxing.  I give them away and so far no one has been brave enough to refuse.  😉  Left to right, a few examples of what I paint:  My sis works for ESPN / ABC Sports covering open wheel racing (Indy cars) so she got a rock car, a family of foxes all curled up fit the rock, these are my ‘pocket pals,’ and I try to have an assortment ready so every child who would enjoy one of these critters can leave with one (note the penny in the middle for perspective), and last is a koi pond — again the rock suited itself to what I painted.

  1. My newspaper wasn’t delivered this morning. I can see papers in driveways of neighbors who sleep in. grumble, gripe, complain.

    • My dear, I am impressed!
Also, being such a poor bastard, I’m thinking ROCKS FOR GIFTS!

I will certainly keep my eye out for suitable rocks.
      I like the yellow car.

I have been contemplating a regular ‘Neat Old Stuff’ thread. Postcards, stamps, odds and ends from years gone by.

      • One year I painted all the gifts my daughter Tonya gave her coworkers, about 15 or so. She had a specific list of interests and I provided them. She wanted an old-fashioned one-room schoolhouse for one, a ballet slipper for another… They make great paperweights! I also do lots of buildings — little houses for gnomes that look nice tucked under a plant in your garden. I did a farm house and barn which became book ends for a farmer friend. I made half a dozen pubs after a visit to Ireland. The one I liked best was Tipsy McStaggers.

That was back before I found blogging. 🙂

Fnord you are full of surprises. I didn’t have you pegged as a rock painter 🙂 . I collect Netsuke (small carved toggles on kimonos) . Hey Sekan, I have a little website called “time has passed” which has old photographs (from glass negs) I bought on eBay. Great stuff but so little time to research…must get back to it. I have collected glass negs from all over the world. There is one particular box of glass negs of a family in St Cloud. I have tried to trace relatives to no avail. It is quite sad having another family’s history….ooh and a little creepy!

      • For the “Neat Old Stuff” thread – I have some good photos of me as a kid. I may not be neat, but I am old. Ha!

  2. I’ve posted before about the anticipated release of the “S to Z” final volume of the Dictionary of American Regional English, which will be published next year. If you love words, here is an update and further information about the dictionary that tells us how we speak, rather than how to speak.

Wow Fnord those are very cool!
My hobby? :> for the most part it has became showing my butt on blogs.
I live to Skin dive in a State where good visiblity is two feet. If anyone knows of a sand pit in this area that still allows people to swim there please let me know?

    • That was the place to swim when I was growing up — Courtney Davis, Crystal Lake… I think they all got shut down due to liability issues. 😦

Thank you for the compliment, tstb. Silly to paint rocks, isn’t it!? I’ve always been somewhat ABnormal.

Oh, and on that “show your butt on blogs,” I’m in!

      • tosmarttobegop

        Crystal lake on North Meridian?
If so that was heaven on earth to me!
Bath water was not as clear and much more enjoyable. But you might be right about the insurance thing. One of those things I have said would happen if I won the lottery is to buy a house in that development that sprung up there.

Sand pits and drive-ins seem more a thing for my generation then for this generation.

    • Tosmart….I found one blog that was a kid who did nothing but ‘FLIP THINGS OFF’.
Nothing but photos of flipping off various annoying things and people.

      • tosmarttobegop

I have seen that a lot on youtube.
There are somethings that it is the right answer to a question. Not all things though.

Pond seem right to have misgivings about President Obama and gay rights.
I watched Howard Dean on Rachael last night and his dancing around reminded me of a farm boy trying to dance to rap. Ahhh no! He suggestion that by working on Don’t ask-Don’t tell as a fitting bone to throw. When the Obama administration defended DOMA by comparing Gay marriage and in effect being Gay to an Uncle marrying his niece, to a child molester and Beastialogy! Such was listed in the DOJ brief in defense of the Defense of marriage act.

Cheney has more an open stance on Gay marriage then the Obama’s DOJ?

    • See the NY Times today for editorial about Obama and gay rights.

      Obama the conservative?

      • tosmarttobegop

Sekanblogger, in a sense that was one of the things that made Obama so attractive to me as a President. His answers seem more Conservative then McCain’s or Clinton’s.
Or should I say more sensible to me, but this is a no-go opinion of Gays and Gay marriage. Such an opinion is the far reaches of the far right and by no means defensible.

      • I’m not a fave liberal in some circles, too middle road I guess.

  5. And what about sweet Sarah the rape joke accuser?
Should she have a feud with Lenno?

“Gov. Palin announced over the weekend that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant. And you thought John Edwards was in trouble before! Now he has really done it.”

Palin’s reaction and her fake righteous indentation is so to those left of the Palin is the spokesperson for the ignorant right. I never saw one thing that made her a great hope for anything. Though I am finding this subject funny to me. Watching Hannity and Coulter talking about how the left is so terrified of Palin that they are constantly attacking her.
The left is having a orgasm every time the right paints her as their hopes and dreams.
“Harder…right there…OH just Please have her as the GOP Candidate in 2012!”.

  7. fnord did not display her best work. She has a flat rock that became an old book – a bible, maybe, if I am remembering correctly. She has a gift, I am here to tell ya.

    • Thank you, Iggy! But that rock screamed book so that was easy. That’s part of the fun — seeing what the rock should be.

My funniest story about the rock talking to me, telling me what it should be — all my family still laugh AT ME over this one.

A sister and brother-in-law in Kansas City are big Chiefs fans and they wanted a big heavy rock painted with the Chiefs logo for display out front of their house. I found a rock shaped exactly like the state of Kansas — rectangle with the Missouri River making a squiggly piece cut off in the upper right corner — it was as good as any map!

I worked hard on that BIG rock, even put a little gold star where Kansas City was — ya know, like they do on maps. The Chiefs logo covered the center and was done really nicely.

I presented the rock proudly and then was told the Chiefs home is Missouri, not Kansas.

I painted another but I think they have the first one out back where they can tell the story and laugh at me some more.

My list of things to do with rocks never included painting them, and probably never will as me and paint have a serious dislike for each other. Having said that, really nice work there, fnord 🙂

  8. Obama blocks list of visitors to White House
Taking Bush’s position, administration denies msnbc.com request for logs

The Obama White House has denied requests by msnbc.com and a nonpartisan watchdog group for the names of White House visitors. The watchdog group says it will file suit Tuesday, accusing Obama of “following the same anti-transparency policy as the Bush administration.”

fnord – very cool rock painting! You have a remarkable gift and a joy of sharing your gift. Truly remarkable!

    Nashville is Talking website…

Sen Diane Black’s (R-Gallatin) legislative aid circulates racist email
    by Christian Grantham – 12:32 pm – June 15th, 2009
Newscoma posted details of a racist email sent from Sherri Goforth, legislative aid for Sen. Diane Black (R-Gallatin).

The email depicts the Presidents of the United States with President Barack Obama as a pair of eyes in a black background.

I spoke with Sherri Goforth minutes ago to confirm she sent this email. She confirmed she had sent it and also said she had received a letter of reprimand from her superiors but said she will stay on the job.

When I asked her if she understood the controversial nature of the photo, Goforth would only say she felt very bad about accidentally sending it to the wrong list. When I gave her a second chance to address the controversial nature of the email, she again repeated that she only felt bad about sending it to the wrong list of people.

“I went on the wrong email and I inadvertently hit the wrong button,” Goforth told NIT. “I’m very sick about it, and it’s one of those things I can’t change or take back.”

Since I lived in Nashville and Chattanooga, Tennessee for awhile, I often visit websites from that region of the country. When I noticed this article about this legislative staffer for a State Republican, it just shows that how I feel about the Republicans as a party is not wrong. These people are vicious. There are too many things like this happening to believe it is only a ‘few bad apples’.

What is worse, is this staffer only received a letter of reprimand for doing this – she still has her job.

The article does show the picture of all the presidents and Obama’s is just a black background with two white eyes showing.

And the Republicans actually think they are on the cusp of a resounding rebound into power?

I know the town of Gallatin where this State Senator is from and guess what, the majority of population there is African-American. I wonder if their voter registration office is being overwhelmed with new voters signing up?

  11. Bad Biker

Speaking of rocks – don’t ban me for this one Fnord – but I just opened a link to lyrics and there was an ad for Gillette.

“The trees look taller if there is no underbrush”

“Why and how to shave your groin.”

There was a video “play” button but I was afraid to push it.

Ya’ spend your life trying to avoid having sharp objects near your groin, and now Gillette is suggesting you do it ON PURPOSE?

    • Wouldn’t that ad be something done in signs along side the road — ending with, of course, Burma Shave! 😉

How many signs do you think? How would it be split up?
