Federal Benefits for Gay Partners

President Obama will extend benefits to the unmarried partners of federal workers tomorrow. The move is a big win for gay rights advocates, who have long requested the change and have expressed disappointment with the President’s handling of other gay issues. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced a similar benefits plan last month for State Department employees.

  1. Let’s hope there is more to come.
Thomas Paine’s dead but liberty loving, rebel rousing soul must be smiling.

I have a wait-and-see attitude about this, particularly after that brief filed in support of DOMA. The best I could assume about that is that the ludicrous and demeaning arguments made were designed to fail. I know the Solicitor General has to represent the government in legal challenges but, geez, was that really necessary? Surely they’re not actually required to defend in substance a plainly unconstitutional law.

Obama says he wants DOMA repealed by legislation, so now is the time to push hard for the same. Even if it doesn’t make it out of the Senate, Abbie Hoffman once noted that Supreme Court decisions “bend with the crowd noise.” And it’s long past time to get such legislation on Obama’s desk.
