“Michelle, my Belle…” The Brits love Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama, wife of U.S. President Barack Obama, left, walks with Britain's Queen Elizabeth II at the reception at Buckingham Palace in London Wednesday, April 1, 2009.
The Brits love Michelle Obama even though she did something you’re not supposed to do, i.e. touch the Queen.  Richard Nixon tried to touch the Queen’s arm and she shrugged him off; just a sign to me that the Queen Mother has  good taste.
The queen put her arm around Michelle, too.  It was not clear who touched whom first.
The British press are calling Michelle, “Mighty Michelle” and “a new Jacqueline Kennedy”.  See the rest of the story here.
What do you bloggers think?  Is this fond reception important, or more made up news?  I and others would especially like to hear from our shy, or not so shy, visitors.

I think you and I should go fetch our comments and post them here. But you have to go first, as mine was in response to yours. 😉

  2. fnord,

Why work that hard? Interested parties can go to the Public Square for today and read them there.

I read several ‘accounts,’ and op-ed pieces of this ‘event.’ This was my favorite:

    “Why Michelle Wows the Brits
    by Tina Brown

The excitement British women feel about the arrival of Michelle Obama in London for the G-20 summit is spiked with awe. She’s so big-time. So self-confident. So devoid of rainy, British diffidence. In a country where most political wives and female members of Parliament are the stylistic equivalent of a tufted ottoman, Michelle’s kind of striding self-assurance, glamour, and broad demographic appeal feels thrillingly 21st-century.”

  4. Mr. President and the First Lady’s warm reception is important, to the whole world.
I think the media hype is always a bit much, but what a stark contrast to the shoe throwing!

I am so proud of our new president, and our country. We do owe GeorgeII something, after all, if it weren’t for him and Cheney the puppet master I don’t think this would have been possible.
So that’s the Bush legacy, making our first black president possible.

bush the lessor did a great job of being a poor example, bringing to the attention of citizens of the world how much better everything is with him being gone. Most everyone compares favorably, President and Mrs. Obama compare extremely favorably — both being intelligent, capable, competent adults! It’s like a breath of fresh air.

“So that’s the Bush legacy, making our first black president possible.”

His only positive contribution to my life.

Welcome Mary. There is a lot we’ve discussed already, about health care and the like, that I’d wished we had your sage words on. But, I am sure more opportunities will happen.

I think it is a symbolic triumph for the Obamas. She dare touch the queen, but the queen embraced her just the same.

From what I’ve heard, Buckingham Palace said the Queen was remarking how tall Michelle Obama is and put her gloved hand on the small of Michelle’s back. In return, Michelle put her arm around the Queen’s shoulder. They also went on to say the show of affection was mutual – so obviously the Palace did not take any offense.

I think this is just the media trying to find something wrong – and with the Obamas – their critics cannot seem to come up with anything to tarnish them.

I bet this is just driving the Republicans nuts! Here they are, back home giving us their alternative budget – which is just a repeat of the Bush budget – tax cuts for wealthy and privatizing Medicare – and the whole world is watching our president and his beautiful wife.

Poor Republicans – they just don’t have that magic touch anymore – do they?

We are seeing the benefits of having elected real people and with Michelle it only adds the icing on the cake. She is warm and human, understanding of not just the world of privilege but of common life where the goal is as much about survival as it is what you want. BTW the Queen touched her first!
