As I sat through the morning news shows, it is abundantly clear – the world has officially gone N-U-T-S
1) The first story was Lance Armstrong and his now-confirmed confession. Hmmmmm…..but when delving deeper into the story – there is a reason he is confessing and it has nothing to to do with him actually wanting to tell the truth. As I’ve been following this story, it’s been reported that if he confesses, there is a way for him to return to his cycling competition.
Oh, well, now that paints a different picture – huh? Now the scuttlebut is that news of his confession was leaked before Oprah’s interview airs on Thursday.
Oh, well, le’t see – do you think it was purposely leaked so that Oprah’s ratings would go through the roof? Duh, you think so??
2) Second story was former Gov. Mark Sanford – we all remember the infamous Applachian Trail hiker – don’t we? It seems he has officially announced he is running for Congress. Well, color me shocked. His defenders say that one should be judged by their totality of their life – not just one part of it. Hmmmm….isn’t that interesting that in the Fundy Christians’ world – one deserves a second chance even when he treated his wife like a piece of dirt beneath his feet – but these same Fundies continue to demonize their president and do not give him the same courtesy as they given their self-admitted-when-got-caught adulterer Fundy Christian male.
And, mind you, Obama has never been caught lying about hiking on some damn trail while he was flying down to Argentina to meet his mistress. But, yet Obama does not deserve anything but these Fundies’ contempt? I call B.S.
3) Jenny Sanford (ex-wife of the above referenced Mark Sanford) was reportedly on the short list to be named to fill the empty Senate seat when Jim DeMint left to go do his noble and Godly-Saintly-Self Righteous and Pious work at the Heritage Foundation. Jenny Sanford was asked if she would consider running for the House seat (the same seat her ex-husband is running for) and she said something to the effect – she does not see any reason to run for a job that is in the dysfunctional group run by John Boehner. O-U-C-H…….Johnny B. got one in the ass….didn’t he?
From the 3 stories above – I have to say – I like Jenny Sanford’s the best. She tells it like it is………and it’s too bad she was not picked to fill the Senate seat. But, I am not surprised she was not picked. After all, this is South Carolina and Jenny Sanford is an outspoken woman ……so……that Fundy Christian male-dominated world of theirs would never allow a woman to freely speak her mind……would they?
I don’t watch Fox, for obvious reasons — they’ve been caught in too many exaggerations and sometimes outright lies (usually by omission) to be trusted. Their slant of the news is a waste of my time. The last time I tuned them in was election night and I laughed while Rove melted down completely as he learned he hadn’t been successful in stealing Ohio (was Anonymous involved?).
I do have the utmost respect for Rachael Maddow! She presents facts, has always responded to anyone who accuses her of saying something that wasn’t factual — sometimes by admitting she got it wrong but most often by giving more facts to support what she reported. MSNBC has a bad rep and they didn’t get that without having done something to deserve it. Since I’m not much of a television viewer I don’t know the ins and outs of that, but I do know Maddow isn’t part of it! Who is it on MSNBC that has tarnished their reputation as a news channel to be trusted?
Some might think Keith Olbermann – when he was on there? I think the bad rep comes from the fact that Foxxies has been spewing this for years and it has trickled down because MSNBC does not appear to support their people very well.
Remember when Keith left? I thought Rachel would follow him to Current. Then Keith got into with Al Gore over on Current and Keith left there – rather quickly.
Now that Al Gore sold Current to Al Jazeera television (?) – Eliot Spitzer left his show rather abruptly.
I do like Jennifer Granholm on Current ….the others are just kind of the left-sided version of Foxxies – nothing to really watch to learn anything.
Joy Behar is on Current….but she is too snarky for my taste.
While Conservative Republicans will demonize this Muslim influence on our television – may I remind them that their Fox News owner – Rupert Murdock – has a Muslim Prince as a business partner. What kind of influence does that Muslim have over at the Foxxies in the Hen House?
Besides – in reading this article, I did not realize there were so many Al Jazeera news bureaus already here in the U.S. – so is a news channel really that far off the mark?
I will continue to watch Current TV to see what happens.
My husband and I routinely watch BBC News – to see what the world view is reporting – and sometimes, that is the only way to get a true big picture of what is really happening.
I had forgotten Keith Olbermann. I think you’re right that he did cause controversy.
I’m not a television watcher. I actually tape The Rachael Maddow show and watch it on my schedule — sometimes watching every minute and sometimes fast-forwarding through. I’ve never watched Current, although it’s in my U-Verse package. When I do turn on the television I first look to see if there is a movie. I find myself watching more KPTS than anything else.
It may be early for you, Fnord, since I know you and Ginger walk in the mornings, but if you’ve never watched Stephanie Miller on Current (8am to 11am) you should give it a try. It’s a cross between shock jock radio and Rachel Maddow. Or, as Miller and Company say, “It’s like a Mensa meeting with fart jokes.” It may also be too snarky for some folks, but I sure prefer it over the other morning news shows. She’s very funny and has good guests, but then, it’s a radio show on TV, kinda like Imus was, so it’s radio with all it’s low brow humor.
Anyway, I like it and if you have a few minutes in the morning, give it a try. It’s pretty much my fave on Current. I like Granholm, and I like Cenk Uyger. I never cared much for Spitzer. And… low brow that I am, I like Joy Behar but it depends on her guests. I hope Al Jazeera makes Current better and stops with the prison gang and marijuana war stories during the day. They remind me of the early days of the Food Network when they didn’t quite have enough good programing to go around the clock, so they filled in with crap. Let’s hope Al Jazeera, with their infusion of cash, can make the network better.
PP – When I say Joy Behar is snarky – I mean her comedic style..(she was a comedienne – correct?). She usually brings up good issues….it must be a personal thing for me – ?
It also depends on Joy’s guests – that Boris the Bloviator (Republican strategist) gets on my last nerve and stays there …..Grrr..
I had forgotten to mention Stephanie Miller….she is a H-O-O-T…(LOL)…
. I like the way she is direct and says what she thinks …….but I’ve never heard her be snarky or mean to anyone……
To be honest – I like the women better in these shows…….
As for Eliot Spitzer – I listened to him but I could never get it out of my mind that he paid for prostitutes (remember that incident?).
But when I liked Spitzer the best was when he was after both parties – and he could go after Obama – which I need to learn the good and bad of Obama.
I find myself liking Ed Schultz a bit more – but I think it’s because his wife has been battling cancer – and he does appear to be devoted to her. I did not catch the good news about his wife last night from Ed. I turned on just as Rachel was coming on and she said that it was awesome news about Wendy.
Did anyone hear this last night? I assume Ed’s wife has received some good news about her cancer……
But…..no matter who is on what chanel…..I just cannot force myself to sit and listen to Foxxies in the Hen House for more than 5 minutes. They remind too much of a Group of Gossipy Old Church Women who love to cackle 24/7.
See I watch both MSNBC and FOX both for that very reason to see how the same story is cover and more often how the slant goes. It generally ends with me laughing out loud at the differences. But what I find frightening is that the news and facts are being slanted to fit into a preconceived notion of the viewer. Pitch your reality from colum A, B, or C.
When I read about Pat Robertson’s mighty wisdom being brought down from his Godly Seat on High – I had to laugh to myself because I was thinking back to my first day at that stupid Courtship and Marriage class at that Fundy Baptist College.
That was a mandated course for all women – but from the very first day – it was crystal clear that women are to wear a pretty hair bow for their man – to keep him happy.
Who would have thunk that? Those Fundies – they’re so funny…
I cried most of the way through the words Vice President Biden and President Obama spoke about measures to curb gun violence. It was moving. It’s what we owe each other, and how we can all work together to improve our world. I think most Moms and maybe even most Dads agree about making sure we do what we can to ensure the safety of our children and all American citizens.
It’s beyond my ability to comprehend those who will fight with everything they have to keep any of these common sense measures from coming to fruition. The gun nuts will put their rights above the rights of everyone else.
We’ll be seeing actual facts — studies of gun violence, studies of measures that are and those that aren’t successful. Actual facts, not propaganda passed around by people with money to make off the sale of guns and ammunition. Real facts!
A newspaper editor and I were talking recently about how people will throw one part of the Bill of Rights totally under the bus to defend a different amendment. Like the gun nuts are so willing to overthrow the first amendment, freedom of speech, just so they can keep their war weapons. They have no idea that the freedom of speech guards and protects all other amendments in the Bill of Rights. If they didn’t have the freedom to speak about guns, their gun rights would have been long gone. But they’d rather curtail freedom of speech, censoring violent talk and video games, than stand up for the FULL Bill of Rights.
When they throw my favorite right under the bus, I’m just that much less likely to support their right. I know not everyone is as adamant about censorship as I am, but we’ve just worked too hard to have complete freedom of speech with no censorship to let it slip away because some folks can’t stand it. Google Frank Zappa quotes to see what I mean.
The Republican Party can’t afford to alienate another group of people. They already have their work cut out to be viable so I think they might need to give these reasonable measures to curb gun violence some deep thought.
Some of the comments I’ve heard are so over the top, so UNreasonable and do no favors for their ’cause.’ But you know what? They have the right to make those statements! Yep, they are free to speak out loud and be very ugly sounding. We’re listening. We’re very capable of discerning what is and isn’t reasonable.
I just listened to Joe Scarborough on Andrea Mitchell (MSNBC) – and he addressed this very issue of how the current GOP and the NRA leadership (he mentioned Wayne LaPierre by name) are not doing themselves any favors with public opinion in how they have chosen to treat folks who are not as narrow as they are.
Scarborough specifically talked about Colin Powell and how the current GOP is running off moderate Republicans.
He also mentioned Chuck Hagel – another REpublican being demonized by the current GOP.
Joe came out and said if they do not adapt to the changing political democraphics – they are in real trouble.
They’ve been in real trouble for a while. If they don’t recognize it, they’ll stay there. As long as they listen to what they want to hear they’ll never know anything different. They don’t even know they live in an alternate reality. Do you think there are some who still believe Romney will win?
They still haven’t realized how much their policies and party platform alienates women, youth, and minorities. The old white guys will be done in by Mother Nature and one day they’ll look around and maybe begin to ask themselves how in the world that happened. Maybe by the time they face reality there won’t even be anyone to look around and wonder.
One of their best attributes seems to be the ability to hear nothing more than they choose to hear, and when they repeat what they’ve heard it allows everyone else to hear how brainwashed they are.
Scarborough made the point that Republicans insulate themselves into these websites and television shows that tells them they are right and others are wrong. Even on election night – there were still Republicans convinced that Romney was going to win. As fnord pointed out when referencing Karl Rove on Fox News.
He also said that Romney got the same percentage of the white vote that George H.W. Bush when he won in a landslide against Dukakis.
Then Scarborough said – and we saw what happened to Romney.
Yes, Indy, Ed’s wife’s cancer is either gone or in remission. Very good news. And yeah, Stephanie Miller is not mean, but she is snarky, and, as noted, what comedian is not?
You know how much I love Rachel, but I waaaay prefer Chris Hayes. I just wish he didn’t come on so damn early on Saturday. And, she doesn’t have her own show, yet, but I am lovin’ me some Joy Reid. I used to like Mellisa Harris Perry when she was a guest, but I’m not crazy about her show. I know she’s smarter than she lets herself be on that morning show. It’s like she’s trying to hard to be the entertainment counterpoint of Chris Hayes, but, hell, if I wanted entertainment, I’d watch cartoons. I want news, information, and intelligent conversation. All of which I get from Chris Hayes.
Too bad they are not hiring fat, gray haired, Kansas farmer lesbians with bad attitudes. I don’t know how good I’d be considering my temper and intolerance for stupid, but I would LOVE to host one of those shows. Would you guys be my guests? I think we’d give’em all a run for their money! HA!
PP – I would love to come join your show….do you think the world is ready for women from Kansas that actually do have a brain with which to think and then the mouth to say what she thinks?
Indy, this is for you. I remember how much you liked Moonshadow’s photos of her granddaughter holding the moon. Look at what this photographer has done!
Thanks – fnord – that is so sweet of you to remember!
You see, this is what a blog should be – not just political sniping – but discussions about the issues, expressing our views and then just remembering that everyone in the group has different interests and a life outside of the bloging time….
I’ve always been intrigued by the moon. The night my brother passed – I remember looking up at the moon and thinking of all the good times we shared while growing up.
Then I thought – I hope he is somewhere in this universe with his wife that passed 6 years before – because they were a couple that truly were meant to be together forever.
I swear…..I am becoming more and more of a Deist with every passing day. I think the Native Indians had the right idea about the spirit world.
But….but…that does not fit into the Far Right Wingerrs’ picture of Obama being a dictator .
You’ve heard their ranting – Obama is out to destroy America. He is a secret Muslim that manipulated his way into the White House to destroy America. He is a total dictator. He does not want to be friends with the Republicans – even though Obama has invited several GOP leaders in the past four years to several events at the White House (by invitation only) and all the GOP leaders declined Obama’s invtitation.
I swear, Republicans will be the ones that if the Rapture does take place, these bufoons will look at Jesus and say – what the hell took you so long.
Yes, I’ve heard their rantings — they tell me exactly who they are, and I believe them. In fact, it would take quite a vivid imagination to make up the characters they are.
