Maybe republicans honestly don’t know the truth. Maybe their candidates are counting on their constituency having convenient and short memories. Either way, here’s the model they all run on, here’s what they want to take America back to –
Reagan was a serial tax raiser. As governor of California, Reagan “signed into law the largest tax increase in the history of any state up till then.” Meanwhile, state spending nearly doubled. As president, Reagan “raised taxes in seven of his eight years in office,” including four times in just two years. As former GOP Senator Alan Simpson, who called Reagan “a dear friend,” told NPR, “Ronald Reagan raised taxes 11 times in his administration — I was there.”
Reagan nearly tripled the federal budget deficit. During the Reagan years, the debt increased to nearly $3 trillion, “roughly three times as much as the first 80 years of the century had done altogether.” Reagan enacted a major tax cut his first year in office and government revenue dropped off precipitously. Despite the conservative myth that tax cuts somehow increase revenue, the government went deeper into debt and Reagan had to raise taxes just a year after he enacted his tax cut. Despite ten more tax hikes on everything from gasoline to corporate income, Reagan was never able to get the deficit under control.
Unemployment soared after Reagan’s 1981 tax cuts. Unemployment jumped to 10.8 percent after Reagan enacted his much-touted tax cut, and it took years for the rate to get back down to its previous level. Meanwhile, income inequality exploded. Despite the myth that Reagan presided over an era of unmatched economic boom for all Americans, Reagan disproportionately taxed the poor and middle class, but the economic growth of the 1980′s did little help them. “Since 1980, median household income has risen only 30 percent, adjusted for inflation, while average incomes at the top have tripled or quadrupled.”
Reagan grew the size of the federal government tremendously. Reagan promised “to move boldly, decisively, and quickly to control the runaway growth of federal spending,” but federal spending “ballooned” under Reagan. He bailed out Social Security in 1983 after attempting to privatize it, and set up a progressive taxation system to keep it funded into the future. He promised to cut government agencies like the Department of Energy and Education but ended up adding one of the largest — the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, which today has a budget of nearly $90 billion and close to 300,000 employees. He also hiked defense spending by over $100 billion a year to a level not seen since the height of the Vietnam war.
Reagan did little to fight a woman’s right to choose. On June 14, 1967, Ronald Reagan signed the Therapeutic Abortion Act, after only six months as California governor. From a total of 518 legal abortions in California in 1967, the number of abortions would soar to an annual average of 100,000 in the remaining years of Reagan’s two terms — more abortions than in any U.S. state prior to the advent of Roe v. Wade.
Reagan gave amnesty to 3 million undocumented immigrants. Reagan signed into law a bill that made any immigrant who had entered the country before 1982 eligible for amnesty. The bill was sold as a crackdown, but its tough sanctions on employers who hired undocumented immigrants were removed before final passage. The bill helped 3 million people and millions more family members gain American residency.
Reagan illegally funneled weapons to Iran. Reagan and other senior U.S. officials secretly sold arms to officials in Iran, which was subject to a an arms embargo at the time, in exchange for American hostages.
Reagan vetoed a comprehensive anti-Apartheid act. which placed sanctions on South Africa and cut off all American trade with the country. Reagan’s veto was overridden by the Republican-controlled Senate.
Reagan helped create the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden. Reagan fought a proxy war with the Soviet Union by training, arming, equipping, and funding Islamist mujahidin fighters in Afghanistan. Reagan funneled billions of dollars, along with top-secret intelligence and sophisticated weaponry to these fighters through the Pakistani intelligence service. The Talbian and Osama Bin Laden — a prominent mujahidin commander — emerged from these mujahidin groups Reagan helped create.
I have to say – I was saddened by all the hate-filled comments I’ve seen people post on other blogs about Whitney Houston’s death.
This is truly a petty little world we live in – and what is so sad is that these are the so-called ‘adults’ in this world?
I was thinking the other day – when (yes, I said ‘when’) President Obama gets his second term, what will the Republicans do then?
Will they double down or triple down on their current hissy-fit, poopy-filled baby diapers throwing fit or will they finally get it through their one-brain-cell mind to just give it up and try to work with Obama?
I can only imagine………God, I’ve got a headache this morning, I really cannot begin to imagine these hate-filled Republicans doing anything but continue on their current path to self destruction. Which would be fine with me – but in their quest to destroy everything – they are taking the rest of the world with them.
And believe me, if these Republicans profess to be such godly Christians and they are going to be in Heaven – God, please, don’t send me with these people because that would be pure Hell for me.
Have you heard any one of them express even a single new idea? I know the answer and we all know they have nothing but what has already failed. We don’t have to question what they’ll do, they’ll obstruct, they’ll blame, they’ll lie — it’s all they have.
They really do own the media! Rachel M. found a Harvard study on who owns the media in the USA, and found that 96% of the media, newspaper, local TV, national TV, along with other forms of comunication are owned by conservatives. You can look it up on the web, and be skeptical but think about it. It takes money to own a newspaper and TV station, the 1%. The local news stations in Wichita are so blatantly conservative it hurts. I won’t name the worst, but there coverage stands out like a sore thumb. It’s hard to count the ways Reagan put it to the working people of America. Demonizing the unions, who are the only voice left for the working people of America. Think about this, one of Hitler’s first actions was to completely eliminate the unions. This country has gone from 34% to 8% of the work force being union since the 1970′s. Look who has gained, CEO salaries, not the average worker. No, I for one don’t look on Reagon as a —– Saint.
But, but….Robert – these poor little ‘persecuted Conservatives’ are encouraging their young CONS to go into journalism to put the truth bak into the media – since the media is so blatantly liberal…
Read these comments and see how many folks agree with these CONS..
I heard this morning Whitney may have died from the combination of alcohol and Xanex. I don’t know how they know that without the tox reports, but… whatever.
This is probably the BEST thing I’ve read about Whitney’s tragic demise. I hope she’s finally at peace, and I wish her mother, daughter, and those close to her some peace as well.
What a tragedy! I can’t think of anyone out there right now that can hit the notes with such ease as Whitney. It’s sad that with her christian background she had to look up to someone like Bobby Brown. Some people can take drugs and then leave it alone, but unfortunating there are those who can’t. Bobby Brown and Whitney was in the end bad for her and all of us.
Where did you find the picture above? That should be reproduced and sent to each and every Republican that cannot wait for their chance to push the war button against Iran.
The picture was all over Facebook. It’s a real picture and a real quote. And it’s a fact that Reagan aided and abetted Osama Bin Laden. Slate did a good article on this historical fact:
Reagan’s Osama Connection
How he turned a jihadist into a terrorist kingpin.
Earlier this week, I cited recently declassified documents to show that Ronald Reagan did indeed play a major role in ending the Cold War. Now it’s time to note that a similar set of documents shows that Reagan also played a major role in bringing on the terrorist war that followed—specifically, in abetting the rise of Osama Bin Laden.
The last time a budget was passed on time was in 1997.
Think about that – George W. Bush was president from 2000 to 2008 and in six of those years (2000 to 2006), Republicans had control of both House and Senate.
But yet when asked about that this morning, Republican Jeff Sessions said that the problem with the budget not being passed in past 3 years is because of the Democrat Senate Leader.
Hey – Jeff – what about the years 2000 to 2006 – it was TOTAL Republican control – BLAME your own guys….
I agree, that whole Moral Majority thing was a bunch of crap to win elections. Jerry Falwell suing Larry Flint shed more light on those so called do-gooders than anything I can remember!
The most quoted speech at CPAC this year was Mitt Romney’s, but my vote for the most significant goes to Grover Norquist’s. In his charmingly blunt way, Norquist articulated out loud a case for Mitt Romney that you hear only whispered by other major conservative leaders when he spoke at CPAC this year. They have reconciled themselves to a Romney candidacy because they see Romney as essentially a weak and passive president who will concede leadership to congressional conservatives.
All we have to do is replace Obama. … We are not auditioning for fearless leader. We don’t need a president to tell us in what direction to go. We know what direction to go. We want the Ryan budget. … We just need a president to sign this stuff. We don’t need someone to think it up or design it. The leadership now for the modern conservative movement for the next 20 years will be coming out of the House and the Senate.
Right, the Ryan budget, so we can allocate more tax cuts for Corps. and the rich. The Corporations will create more jobs for somebody. Maybe the Chinese will get rich and buy more American goods after the prevailing wage has dropped to around 50 cent per hr.
George H.W. Bush got the Japanese citizens to write a check for $13.5 billion to the U.S. to pay for the first Gulf War. He was perhaps the last fiscally responsible war-time U.S. President.
Wars cost lots and lots of money — and if a substantial chunk of the GOP crowd wants these wars and feels that it is in our national interest to have them, then by all means they should start lining up some of the wealthiest in the country who are helping to agitate for these conflicts to pay more in taxes for them.
Republicans are not against raising taxes – as long as the richest 1% do not have to pay their taxes.
That is, after all, the GOP’s only concern – that 1%. But isn’t it telling how many of the uneducated Republican base – who will never be a part of the 1% – are so committed to making sure that the 1% are tax free?
Speaking of Grover Norquist – this is interesting reading. Remember the convivcted felon lobbyist Jack Abrhamhoff? Remember the name Ralph Reed of the Christian Coalition?
Do some more research and you’ll find Rick Santorum was also tied to Abrahmhoff, Norquist and Reed through the infamous K Street Gang.
This is confusing to read – but Abramhoff and Gang defrauded the Indian tribes out of several millions of dollars in that casino deal.
But NOW Grover Norquist is actually promoting the casino gambling (of course, all the ‘right’ people will now reap the benefits – not the Indians – so I guess that makes it okay?
That old saying – follow the money – is true. Also – follow the same snakes – that is also true.
indy, As I’ve always believed, don’t trust a man who wears his religion on his something. Santorum also voted to give tax breaks to corporations who moved out of country. A real Patriot he is, and will take care of them ole Iranians if I’m elected president, by God!
Santorum and the rest of the Republicans think that asking the 1% to pay even one more dime in taxes is a crime (even though the 1% has done very well – at the expense of the 99%).
There is nothing patriotic about these Republicans – they are leeches off the America they profess to love so much.
I remember when Rosie the Riveter women took jobs in the factories during WW II because the men were off fighting. I also remember how people used to buy war bonds or save their scraps of metal to help the war effort.
Can you imagine what the response would be today if that kind of team unity and dedication was asked in order to get some goal accomplished?
There are too many of the ‘What’s it in for me’ attitude from today’s citizens. And that came from Reagan’s Decade of Greed…
Will this investigation go anywhere? I’m all for investigations – on the right and the left side of the aisle – but let’s actually do something when a wrong has been committed – shall we?
I just heard a discussion on NPR about the reauthorizastion of the Violence Against Women Act. Sen Leahy was talking about how this needs to be a bipartisan issue. Some Anti-Domestic Violence Activist was saying that she was hopeful more Republicans could be convinced to sign on board to reauthorize this…
WTF….. why would any Republican be FOR violence against women? Isn’t it very telling that this legislation – which is already on the books – and is simply up for reauthorization has trouble convincing Republicans to get on board.
Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins (ME) have both come out in favor of the new mandate, with the accommodation Obama made.
Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), who led the GOP’s opposition to the original rule, has yet to issue a statement on the measure
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) has not responded whether she’s for or against this.
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) has not responded either (although she did co-sponsor a bill in 1999 requiring contraception equity in insurance coverage)
It’ll be interesting to see which other Republicans come out in favor of this.
Hey – I think Democratic Senators and Congreswomen should get together and propose legislation that if no birth control pills are covered then no erectile dysfunction pills will be covered either.
I wonder how many men will step up to the plate and vote for that….
Isn’t it telling that these Republicans, bolstered by their Catholic Church buddies, all seem to think birth control is ‘unnatural’ but yet these same folks think their erectile dysfunction pills are a gift from God?
Listen very carefully to these Republicans about Obama’s proposed 2013 budget. These folks do not like all that spending on Americans infrastructure, education, healthcare, etc.
Excuse me, but weren’t these the same folks that had no problem with spending our tax dollars on the Iraqi infrastructure, education, health care, etc.?
Indy, I believe your question is too broad. Ask it another way, please. The voting majority — which by the way is not at all a majority — and the majority of officials they put into office to govern our states and union (US) interests do indeed, as far as I can see, create the “hate” of which you speak. Also, “Americans” may correctly mean many, many more and different states than just the United States. I believe it is easy to understand why millions of citizens, both American and foreign, hate we Americans, i.e., the United States “so much.” In a democracy, we the people, receive the rightful blame: Too many vote wrong and too many more don’t even vote. And the new GOP voter restriction laws are designed to make it worse.
What I meant was – if George W. Bush’s budgets that spent our tax dollars on Iraqi people for the same things – infrastructure, education, health care and etc – then why is Obama’s budget spending the same tax dollars on AMERICAN instrastructure, education, health care and etc a BAD thing?
That has nothing to do with who votes right or wrong – it is comparing apples to apples.
I don’t hear too many Democrats demonizing Obama for wanting to spend US tax dollars on Americans.
Just the Republicans seem to do that – and they do it all the time…
So, the GOP caves in on the payroll tax extension. But read the part about Johnny Boehner talking about how this is not their first choice but due the Democrats’ stonewalling and obstructionism – they (GOP) are going to protect small business…..yada, yada and more damn yada.
Maybe republicans honestly don’t know the truth. Maybe their candidates are counting on their constituency having convenient and short memories. Either way, here’s the model they all run on, here’s what they want to take America back to –

Don’t forget – Reagan was also a UNION leader who used collective bargaining to get health care benefits for his fellow unionized actors.
That fact alone should make every current-day Republican STFU…..
But, but ……Mitt told us why – Corporations are people too, my friend.
Besides – I’ve learned that there is no shaming Republicans – because these people DO NOT CARE….
Mitt is no friend to any working American….that’s for sure…

I love me some Susie Bright! I used to see and hear her fairly regularly in Austin.
If she was drinking and she was known to have been taking Xanax – then perhaps this is just an educated guess?
Perhaps they are trying to stomp down on all the rumors of a drug overdose?
I’m like you – I wish her mother, daughter and all who loved Whitney some peace at this horrible time.
And I wish Whitney has found peace – because she certainly did have some troubled years here on Earth.
But, in reality, who among us can say we have not had troubled times here on Earth?
Some people just have live their troubled lives in the public spotlight.
Didn’t Whitney once say that she was her best friend or her worst own enemy?
As for taking up with Bobby Brown – sometimes our heart wants what the hearts wants – even though we know our head tells us to stay the hell away.
That’s just being human…….

To think – in 1980 – Ronald Reagan used all kinds of tricks to get rid of Jimmy Carter – the true Christian – IMHO.
Let’s not forget that Reagan brought that Jerry Falwell into the GOP inner circle through that damn Moral Majority.
And the rest is history……..
I heard an interesting statistic this morning.
The last time a budget was passed on time was in 1997.

They have reconciled themselves to a Romney candidacy because they see Romney as essentially a weak and passive president who will concede leadership to congressional conservatives.
Which is the all more reason to turn the House and Senate back into Democrat-controlled – IMHO
Besides – Conservative leadership in the likes of Rand Paul, Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor, Michele Bachmann and others of the weak-minded?

Well, of course, Newt Gingrich was reprimanded and fined when he was investigated for ethics violation while he was Speaker of the House.
But to hear Newt tell it now – it was no big deal and he did not pay any fine – it was just him repaying the ‘costs’.

You are correct Bobwhite! Just means the Democrats will have work a little harder this election.
Just the Republicans seem to do that – and they do it all the time…
I was out doing errands and saw a bumper sticker that made chuckle..
Erections are not a right….. Can I assume it is some woman who feels as I do about these neanderthal men trying to control women?
I’ve never put a bumper sticker on my car but I might have to consider that one.
This did give me a chuckle……..and on a day like this weather to drive in – that was a good thing…
Hey, easy on us men!
I’ve noticed alot of Republican males have the name of DICK……..maybe now we know the reason??
LMAO
So, the GOP caves in on the payroll tax extension. But read the part about Johnny Boehner talking about how this is not their first choice but due the Democrats’ stonewalling and obstructionism – they (GOP) are going to protect small business…..yada, yada and more damn yada.
What planet are these folks living on?

The Moon!
Not a planet, but close enough.
I’m still hoping Newt gets his moon colony up and runnig – on the private sector dime, of course.
Then Newt can take his lovely wife and fellow CONS and colonize the Moon.
I just couldn’t resist (and couldn’t quit giggling either).
And for those who cannot comprehend what slow means – move to the Far Right…..
I sure am tempted to re-post that graphic!
